As a small child she grew up free on a naturist island off the southern coast of france moving during the war to a safe enclave in the eastern mountains her mother. The sylvette series is now seen as one of picasso s most diverse and experimental bodies of work to be inspired by a single woman. At the age of nineteen lydia had moved to vallauris in the south of france with her mother who worked at a pottery studio in the town.
